Filmmaker Lance Oppenheim's first narrative feature, "Primetime," which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, delves into the complex character of a television host reminiscent of Chris Hansen from "To Catch a Predator." Robert Pattinson stars as the ambitious, egotistical, and seemingly delusional host, whose show aims to apprehend individuals engaging in predatory online behavior.
The film is set in 2006, chronicling the opportunity for the host and his producer, Andie (Merritt Wever), to move their program to a primetime slot. The narrative highlights the escalating stakes and the potential for significant rewards, alongside the host's growing hubris and his ability to convince others of the public service he believes he is providing.
To achieve its investigative goals, the show employs young decoys posing as underage individuals. Among these is Del (singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers), an adaptable performer capable of impersonating either gender. Del shares information with a hesitant newcomer, eventually known as Decoy Dan, portrayed by Skyler Gisondo. Gisondo's performance captures the character's eagerness and underlying apprehension as he navigates the ethically fraught role.
Despite aspirations for an acting career, Decoy Dan expresses a desire to leave the job upon recognizing its demeaning nature. However, the host, with a disarming demeanor and persuasive tone, convinces him to stay, framing the work as a means to eradicate evil from the world.
