Orlando Bloom Describes Filming Intimate Scene with Mara Sisters

Orlando Bloom has detailed the experience of filming an intimate scene with sisters Rooney and Kate Mara for their new film, "Bucking Fastard." The actor described the moment as "sincere" and highlighted an "innocence to the sisters" despite the carnal nature of their characters' desires.

The film, directed by Werner Herzog, is based on the true story of British twins Freda and Greta Chaplin, portrayed by the Mara sisters. Bloom plays the shared love interest of the twins.

"My character, the Bucking Fastard, is sensitive too. And he’s quite quickly out of his depth in some ways," Bloom told Variety. "It was a very sincere sort of moment that was created."

Herzog himself commented on the scene, noting that he provided minimal direction to Bloom. "In the love scene, I said to Orlando: 'You are in bed, and you have two women in your arms. How you deal with it, I cannot give instructions.' It is beautiful because it has such charm and depth," the director said.

The Mara sisters, Rooney and Kate, are acting together for the first time in the film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival. They play the co-dependent Holbrooke twins, Jean and Joan, who are known for speaking in unison, sharing dreams, and loving the same man.

Rooney Mara, 41, stated that playing the same person came naturally due to their lifelong bond. "Having had a lifetime together and all the history and a childhood of playing together there was a world between us, we didn't have to work very hard to create it at all," she said, adding that the experience was filled with laughter and was "once in a lifetime."

Kate Mara, 43, described the experience of speaking in unison as feeling "like a song, it was very musical." She also shared that Herzog had sent them a compelling letter about the project, which she and her sister had long wanted to do together.

"This one was immediately a no-brainer, and then it just so happened that it was these sisters who are so connected that they speak in unison and they dream the same dreams," Kate Mara explained. "It was so perfectly presented and the script was so special, and odd, so it's an obvious thing to say yes to."

"Bucking Fastard" is set in Ireland and also features Domhnall Gleeson as a social worker. Bloom is reportedly dating model Luisa Laemmel and has two children from previous relationships: a son with ex-wife Miranda Kerr and a daughter with ex-fiancée Katy Perry.
