Nigella Lawson Admits Baking Nerves Ahead of Great British Bake Off Debut

Nigella Lawson, a celebrated figure in the culinary world, has confessed to feeling apprehensive about her upcoming role as a judge on The Great British Bake Off. Ahead of the show's new season premiere, Lawson revealed she is 'no polished' baker herself and harbors concerns about critiquing amateur contestants.

"I was a bit worried because, well, you wouldn't mark me up for my polished finishes as a baker," Lawson told Radio Times. She added that she doesn't typically consider herself a judge, having come to baking later in life and learning through practice as a home baker. This personal connection to the contestants' experiences, she noted, gives her sympathy for their efforts.

Lawson will join longtime judge Paul Hollywood in assessing the 12 contestants vying for the title of this year's Bake Off champion. This marks a shift from her previous judging experience on MasterChef Australia, where she evaluated professional chefs.

Paul Hollywood commented on Lawson's addition to the panel, describing her as a "very warm person, especially to the bakers." He characterized her approach as nurturing, contrasting it with his own role as the "constant" and "constructively critical" presence. Hollywood also noted that each judge brings a unique dynamic to the show, with Lawson offering a different perspective than previous judges like Mary Berry and Prue Leith.

This season of The Great British Bake Off will feature several new elements, including "wearable" bakes, a free-from week, and a challenge where bakers compete alongside a relative. Hollywood expressed his traditionalist views on format changes but acknowledged the "fantastic idea" of the audience-chosen "bake with a relative" challenge.
