Nicola Coughlan, known for her role as Penelope Featherington in the Netflix series "Bridgerton," has announced she will be taking a step back from her regular duties in the upcoming fifth season. The actress described the move as "bittersweet" in a recent interview with E! News.

"I feel like, God, I had such an epic run," Coughlan, 39, stated. "I think that’s part of the beauty of that world is it keeps reinventing itself. Every season being a new story — it takes on a different guise."

Coughlan’s character, Penelope Featherington, is also known as the secret author Lady Whistledown, whose gossip pamphlet chronicled the secrets and affairs of Regency London society. Featherington's identity was revealed to the public and her romantic interest, Colin Bridgerton, played by Luke Newton, at the end of Season 3.

In Season 4, Penelope struggled with the loss of anonymity and the repercussions of her writings. By the season's end, she decided to retire as Lady Whistledown to focus on her marriage and future as a mother. However, a new, as-yet-unidentified imposter has since emerged as the gossip columnist.

Coughlan admitted she does not know the identity of the new Lady Whistledown, stating she is "really bad at keeping secrets" and that the showrunners have learned not to tell her. She expressed contentment with not knowing, saying, "I don't need to know."

While the extent of her involvement in Season 5, slated for release in 2027, has not been fully detailed, Coughlan affirmed her willingness to return. "I’ll always pop back to 'Bridgerton' if they want me," she said. "If I can be set dressing, I’ll be there. No problem."

Season 5 is set to focus on Lady Francesca Stirling, portrayed by Hannah Dodd, and Michaela Stirling, played by Masali Baduza, featuring what is described as "Bridgerton's first same-gender central love story." The characters were brought together by the death of Francesca’s husband and Michaela’s relative, Lord John Stirling, in Season 4.
