Monty Don has expressed he is "deeply moved" by the emotional response to his departure from the BBC's Gardeners' World, his last episode airing on Friday night. The 71-year-old horticulturist announced in September that he would be stepping down from the popular program after more than two decades at the helm.

Don's final broadcast from his Longmeadow home was an emotional one, during which he described hosting the show as an "incredible privilege." Following the episode, a significant outpouring of appreciation was evident from both the public and well-known personalities.

Jeremy Clarkson shared on Instagram that Don is "the best presenter on TV. By a mile." Radio host Zoe Ball offered her gratitude, stating, "emotional times. wonderful Monty. ever grateful for all your magic at Longmeadow." Jo Whiley thanked him for his "endless kindness" and "hospitality at Longmeadow." Fellow Gardeners' World presenter Carol Klein wished him and his family "all the very best for the future."

Responding to the tributes on social media, Don wrote, "Thanks for all the kind comments. I am overwhelmed and deeply moved." Viewers shared their sadness at his exit, with one commenter writing, "So sad to see you go. Thanks for all the years of joy." Another described the moment as "end of an era" and thanked him for providing "a moment of calm in a crazy world."

In his farewell message, Don reflected on his 23 years presenting the show, 16 of which were filmed at Longmeadow. He thanked viewers for joining him on his "journey" and wished them luck with their own gardens. "From myself, Ned, and Longmeadow it's the final goodbye," he said, mentioning his dogs and the evolving garden over the years.

Despite his departure from the weekly show, Don will continue to appear on screen. He is part of the presenting lineup for the 2027 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show and will feature in two winter specials expected before Christmas. He is also set to begin filming a new travel program titled Island Gardens.

Don had previously stated that "now is the right time for a change," citing a desire to write more books and make other programs, while assuring he would continue gardening at Longmeadow. He also acknowledged that the BBC's contribution to the salaries of his two full-time gardeners would cease, and he would need to find ways to generate income from his garden to maintain his team.

Monty Don began presenting Gardeners' World in 2003 and has hosted from his Longmeadow home since 2011. The BBC's chief content officer, Katie Phillips, thanked Don for his "honesty and kindness" and expressed sadness at his departure. The final series hosted by Don will continue to be broadcast from Longmeadow until later this year.
