Monty Don has concluded his 23-year tenure as presenter of the BBC's "Gardeners' World," bidding an emotional farewell to viewers in his final episode on Friday. The horticulturist, 71, announced his departure in September, stating that he felt it was "the right time for a change" after hosting the program from his Longmeadow home.
His final broadcast was met with an outpouring of appreciation from fans and fellow celebrities. Jeremy Clarkson took to Instagram to call Don "the best presenter on TV. By a mile." Radio personality Zoe Ball expressed her gratitude for "all your magic at Longmeadow," while Jo Whiley thanked him for his "endless kindness." Fellow "Gardeners' World" star Carol Klein wished him "all the very best for the future."
In a social media post following the show, Don stated he was "overwhelmed and deeply moved" by the kind comments. Viewers shared their emotions online, with many expressing sadness at his exit and thanking him for "years of joy" and for providing "a moment of calm in a crazy world."
During his final sign-off, Don reflected on his time with the program. "From myself, Ned, and Longmeadow it's the final goodbye," he told viewers. "I first began presenting 23 years ago at Berryfields and we came here to Longmeadow 16 years ago and, in that time, things have changed. The garden has grown... but there has been one constant factor, and that has been the incredible privilege and pleasure of sharing my garden and my gardening life with you here, as well as working with so many superb people."
Don confirmed that he will continue to appear on screen, with plans to present the 2027 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show and two winter specials expected before Christmas. He also mentioned he is set to begin filming a travel program titled "Island Gardens."
In a video shared earlier in the week, Don described his time on "Gardeners' World" as a "complete privilege." He explained that while his filming at Longmeadow has concluded, he will "still be gardening, dog by my side, here at Longmeadow." He also noted that the BBC's contribution to the salaries of his two full-time gardeners would cease.
Don began presenting "Gardeners' World" in 2003 and has hosted from his Longmeadow home since 2011. The BBC's chief content officer, Katie Phillips, thanked Don for his "honesty and kindness" and expressed sadness at his departure. The final series hosted by Don will continue to be broadcast from Longmeadow until later this year.
