Lisa Wilkinson, a former Australian television presenter, has publicly expressed her support for the survivors of convicted rapist Russell Brand. In a scathing online message posted Friday, Wilkinson stated that Brand "has been hiding in plain sight for years," a common tactic of predators in positions of trust and influence.
Brand faces a lengthy prison sentence after being convicted of raping one woman and sexually assaulting three others during his career. Wilkinson shared her message on Instagram, emphasizing her solidarity with the survivors.
"The enormity of the successful conviction of rapist Russell Brand cannot be underestimated," Wilkinson wrote. "Please hold a place in your heart today for the survivors who so bravely came forward and faced the court process with enormous dignity and conviction."
She also acknowledged the journalists at Channel 4 UK whose work initially brought the allegations to public attention. Brand, who gained fame as a comedian, television host, and Hollywood actor, was found to have preyed on women during his rise to prominence.
The Metropolitan Police in the UK confirmed ongoing investigations into two rape allegations against Brand, with Sir Mark Rowley, the force's chief, anticipating that "many more" alleged victims may come forward.
Jurors at Southwark Crown Court found Brand guilty of raping a 21-year-old fan in 2009 and sexually assaulting an MTV worker in 2004, as well as a Capital Radio worker in 2005. He was also convicted of sexually assaulting a Channel 4 employee in 2009. He was acquitted of three other charges.
Brand's victims told the court how he allegedly forced them into sexual activity, sometimes shortly after meeting them, exploiting his fame in pursuit of a goal to sleep with thousands of women. He was remanded into custody and is scheduled to be sentenced.
