The Season 3 finale of "House of the Dragon" delivered a dramatic turn of events as Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen embraced a new, prophesied identity and the brutal Battle of Tumbleton concluded with immense losses on both sides.

Rhaenyra, grappling with the news of Aegon's actions, finds a tactical resolve with Daemon's encouragement. Shifting into High Valyrian, they solidify a plan for aggressive action, with Daemon emphasizing strength as the realm's only understood language. Rhaenyra then orders the attack on Tumbleton, her resolve hardened.

The Battle of Tumbleton

Inside Tumbleton, Ormund knights Daeron, while Daemon leads the Team Black land army outside the town. Daemon rejects a plea for a political solution from Ser Gwayne, focusing instead on reclaiming Lord Corlys. The battle commences with Daemon rallying his troops, calling for their ferocity.

Meanwhile, in King's Landing, Rhaenyra, now in full armor and bearing her father's crown, en route to the Grand Sept with her son Joffrey, speaks of the Song of Ice and Fire. Facing defiance from the septons, she has the high priest executed, signaling her diminished need for the Faith's approval. Addressing a gathering of commoners, Rhaenyra proclaims her rule is prophesied and reveals the Targaryen lineage's ancient duty: to protect against a looming darkness beyond the Wall. She declares herself "Rhaenyra the Chosen" and "The Prince That Was Promised."

The Battle of Tumbleton escalates into a chaotic and bloody affair. Ulf the White, initially a turncoat, becomes an agent of destruction, turning his dragon, Silverwing, on Tumbleton itself and killing Ormund Hightower. The battle results in massive casualties, with the fate of Tumbleton uncertain as both Black and Green forces suffer heavily.

Personal Tragedies and Shifting Alliances

Amidst the conflict, Helaena Targaryen, in her chambers, leaps to her death from an open window, a tragic end seemingly foreshadowed in her needlework. Alicent Hightower, far away, witnesses a flock of blue butterflies, a potential omen.

As the smoke clears at Tumbleton, a dazed Corlys informs Daemon that Ulf has turned and the town is lost, with Corlys and Daemon preparing to withdraw. Rhaenyra, unaware of the full extent of the battle's outcome, arrives at Helaena's chambers and closes the shutters, seemingly resolute in her chosen path.

Several characters' fates remain in question or are newly defined. Gwayne Hightower survives the battle, searching for Daeron, whose status is unknown. Mysaria is alive, having been banished to Pentos by Rhaenyra. Baela and Rhaena remain alive but are in disfavor. Ser Hugh Hammer appears to have died in the carnage. Alys Rivers survives and forms a bond with Aemond, sharing a kiss and hinting at future developments.

The season concludes with a cliffhanger as Aegon II, scarred, arrives at Harrenhal on Sunfyre, expressing a desire for retribution against Aemond for his attempted murder. Aemond's actions suggest a potential refusal to grant Aegon's wish for kinslaying, setting up future conflict.
