The third season finale of HBO's "House of the Dragon" saw the dramatic deaths of Helaena Targaryen and Ormund Hightower, alongside betrayals and a devastating battle in Tumbleton.
The episode concluded with Helaena Targaryen, played by Phia Saban, appearing to die by suicide by jumping from a castle window. Helaena, who was described as a "dreamer" with precognitive abilities, had been held under tight watch by her half-sister, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, throughout the season.
Shortly before her death, Helaena confronted Rhaenyra, stating, "all the things you care about are ugly." Her death was not explicitly shown, but the aftermath revealed her body below the window. A piece of embroidery Helaena had been working on, depicting her own fall and Rhaenyra on the Iron Throne surrounded by flames, was later observed by the queen, hinting at future conflicts.
Helaena's fate occurred amidst the escalating civil war for the Iron Throne, primarily between Rhaenyra and her half-brother, Aegon Targaryen. The conflict was further complicated by the introduction of Aegon's brother, Daeron Targaryen, and his guardian, Ormund Hightower.
The Battle of Tumbleton
The finale featured a brutal battle at Tumbleton. Daemon Targaryen, Rhaenyra's uncle and husband, led forces against Ormund Hightower and his troops, aiming to place Daeron on the throne. During the battle, Ormund was fatally wounded by Roderick Dustin, also known as Roddy the Ruin. Dustin also died in the confrontation, losing an arm in the process.
A significant betrayal also occurred during the battle when Ulf White, a dragon rider initially aligned with Rhaenyra and Daemon, turned against them. Ulf attacked Daemon's forces with his dragon, resulting in widespread destruction and casualties. Tumbleton was left in ruins.
While Gwayne Hightower and Daeron Targaryen seemingly survived the carnage, Rhaenyra lost Helaena and the dragon rider Ulf. The fate of another dragon rider, Hugh Hammer, whose wife died in the battle, remains uncertain, casting doubt on his continued loyalty to Rhaenyra.
Meanwhile, Aegon, who had been absent for much of the season, met with his brother Aemond Targaryen to devise a plan to overthrow Queen Rhaenyra.
The series, a prequel to "Game of Thrones," is set nearly 200 years before the events of the original show and depicts the Targaryen civil war. "House of the Dragon" is slated to conclude with its upcoming fourth season, expected to premiere in 2028. Showrunner Ryan Condal has previously explained that the extended production time, including effects work, accounts for the multi-year gaps between seasons.
