Goodwood Revival Celebrates Vintage Style and Motorsport
Enthusiasts don period costumes for the annual celebration of classic cars and fashion from the 1940s, 50s, and 60s.
The Goodwood Revival festival transformed the Motor Circuit in Goodwood, Chichester, into a scene from the past as thousands of vintage enthusiasts gathered for the annual event. Attendees embraced the spirit of the era, sporting an array of meticulously chosen period ensembles, ranging from elegant polka-dot dresses and luxurious furs to classic leather jackets.
The three-day festival, launched in 1998, is dedicated to celebrating mid-20th century motorsport and its associated fashion. It recreates the atmosphere of the Goodwood Motor Circuit's heyday between 1948 and 1966, when it hosted prestigious races like the Tourist Trophy and the Glover Trophy.
A notable highlight of the event is the Settrington Cup, a race for children aged four to 10 competing in Austin J40 pedal cars, which takes place on both Saturday and Sunday. On the opening day of the festival, participants showcased their flair for fashion, with even the youngest attendees dressed in fetching racing suits and flat caps for their miniature car races.
Glamorous groups coordinated their outfits, with one trio opting for matching off-shoulder dresses and heart-shaped sunglasses. The event's ethos, as described on the Goodwood website, emphasizes cherishing clothing, cars, and belongings, reflecting a time when items were valued for longevity.
Established by Freddie March, the 9th Duke of Richmond, the original circuit closed in 1966. His grandson, Charles, the Earl of March, revived the circuit and the Revival festival in 1998. During the event, modern vehicles are prohibited from the circuit, and pre-1966 aircraft are also featured, further enhancing the immersive step back in time.
