Gillian Anderson has offered a behind-the-scenes look at her upcoming role in the queer slasher film "Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma," sharing a series of blood-soaked images on social media. The actress, 57, posted playful selfies with co-star Hannah Einbinder, 31, both covered in fake blood while between filming scenes.
One photo captured Anderson and Einbinder holding up their phones for a selfie at a gas station, while another showed them holding hands on top of a shopping trolley in a supermarket setting. Anderson captioned the series of images with "All in a day's work."
"Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma," directed by Jane Schoenbrun, follows an indie director played by Einbinder who attempts to reboot a slasher franchise. Her efforts lead her to Anderson's character, a former star of the original film, sparking an obsession with casting the original "final girl."
The film received a positive reception at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was met with a six-minute standing ovation. Schoenbrun, who identifies as transfeminine and non-binary, described Anderson's performance as "so funny and strange and a little bit grotesque and a little bit sad — so far from our traditional notions of high-fem sexuality, while also still being incredibly sexy and weird."
Following the film's screening, Anderson was seen embracing director Schoenbrun amidst the audience's applause. The actress attended the Cannes red carpet event in a pink satin dress alongside Einbinder.
Schoenbrun has previously discussed the challenges of securing funding for independent films, particularly for transgender artists. "When I look around in our 'post-woke, post-Biden' era, I don't see any other trans artists getting budgets, and that's a f*****g shame," Schoenbrun stated in an interview. They expressed confidence in the film's potential success, adding, "I think this movie will be a hit."
"Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma" is slated to open the Un Certain Regard program at Cannes and is scheduled for a cinema release on August 7.
