Fox World Cup announcer John Strong misidentified actor Matt Damon as Brad Pitt during the World Cup final match on Sunday. The mix-up occurred as the camera panned to Damon, who was in attendance with his wife, Luciana Barroso Damon.
"Brad Pitt also among the fans here," Strong announced with certainty before quickly correcting himself. "Oh, it's Matt Damon. That's Matt Damon. ... Apologize to both," he said.
Strong later appeared to joke about his error, telling colleague Stu Holden, "I got cocky after the first three, and I missed an absolute sitter, so I'm done." He had apparently been tasked with identifying celebrities in the stands.
Media outlets noted the coincidence of the mistake, given that Damon is currently starring in "The Odyssey," while Pitt previously portrayed Achilles in the 2004 film "Troy."
This gaffe occurred after another World Cup sportscaster was removed from the tournament for confusing New Zealand and Iran during a match's opening minutes.
