Putting up Christmas decorations before the festive season is "SO common," according to commentator Clare Foges in a Daily Mail opinion piece. Foges's assertion is part of a broader discussion on "common" tastes, drawing from the annual list compiled by Nicky Haslam.
Haslam's list of what is considered common includes items such as quail's eggs, being thin, birthday cakes for adults, signs pleading "No Junk Mail," and stand-up comedians. Foges adds the early display of Christmas decorations to this collection.
"Speaking as an ambassador for those triggered by Christmas, may I make an earnest plea that we do not start Christmas now?" Foges writes. "Better still, perhaps we could make Christmas every four years."
She further states, "There is one item which would top the list of common things for me. The occasion which is peak common, uber common, as common as muck – and that is Christmas."
The piece suggests that the "gaudy" nature of premature Christmas decorations contributes to their commonality, implying a lack of sophisticated taste associated with their early appearance.
