Duncan Sheik, Grammy-Nominated Singer and Broadway Composer, Dies at 56
The acclaimed artist, known for his hit "Barely Breathing" and the musical "Spring Awakening," died of organ failure.
Duncan Sheik, the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter whose 1996 hit "Barely Breathing" became a global success and who later found acclaim as a composer for musical theater, has died at age 56. His death was confirmed by a spokesperson who stated he died of organ failure on Wednesday.
Sheik had been hospitalized in New York City in critical condition. News of his hospitalization was shared by his team via an Instagram statement hours before his passing, requesting privacy during the difficult time.
"The world has lost a singular talent, and deeply influential voice in music and theater," read a statement from his representative. "From his Grammy-nominated hit Barely Breathing to his groundbreaking, Tony and Grammy Award-winning work on Spring Awakening, Duncan’s artistry touched many and leaves an indelible mark on the cultural landscape."
Born in Montclair, New Jersey, Sheik released nine studio albums as a solo artist. His self-titled debut album in 1996 featured "Barely Breathing," which reached No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained on the chart for 55 weeks. Other singles from the album included "She Runs Away" and "Reasons for Living."
Broadway Acclaim
Sheik's career expanded significantly into musical theater, most notably with "Spring Awakening." The musical, based on a 1891 German play, earned him a Tony Award for Best Original Score in 2007, alongside Steven Sater. The production also won Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Orchestrations.
He also composed the score for "Twelfth Night" for the New York Shakespeare Festival in 2002, marking his initial ventures into composing. Later, he adapted the Bret Easton Ellis novel and film "American Psycho" into a musical, which debuted in London in 2013 and on Broadway three years later. Sheik discussed his approach to "American Psycho," telling Rolling Stone that he aimed for depth and ambiguity rather than a campy interpretation.
In interviews, Sheik spoke about the satisfaction of blending his musical abilities with the collaborative elements of theater, such as set design, lighting, and choreography. He contrasted this with his solo career, noting the distinct creative processes involved.
Sheik is survived by his wife, Nora Ariffin, and their daughter, Ines.
An off-Broadway production of "Spring Awakening" was scheduled to begin performances on November 27, with an opening night set for December 17.
