Dakota Johnson Calls Musicians 'Tricky,' Expresses Desire for Children

Dakota Johnson has described musicians as "tricky motherfers" while also candidly expressing her strong desire to have children. The actress, whose previous long-term relationship was with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, discussed her views on artists and her personal life in a cover interview for Vogue. Johnson, 36, has previously been linked to indie singer Role Model and is currently rumored to be dating Machine Gun Kelly, who has two children. "They like me. I don’t know what to say. And I like them," Johnson said when asked about her frequent romantic entanglements with musicians. When pressed on what she disliked about them, she responded with a laugh, "A lot! A lot. Tricky motherfers."

Johnson revealed that she "really" wants to start a family, admitting, "I didn’t expect to be this age and at this place in my life, but for whatever reason, that’s the plan of the universe. So I would love that. I hope that that happens for me." She added that she has "always felt, especially the last few years, that there is a soul that wants to come through. And I hope that I’m lucky enough to be able to do that."

Experiences on set have highlighted her feelings on the matter. "It’s hard to be around my best friends, and even on set, and everyone has their baby, and, you know, starting families, and things turned out differently than I thought. But it's okay. I'm hopeful for that," she stated, referencing her co-stars on her upcoming movie The Three Incestuous Sisters who brought their young children to set.

Johnson has maintained a private personal life. When asked about her current romantic status, she deflected, stating, "I don’t want to say anything about that." She also noted her preference for privacy, saying, "I’m obsessed with people not knowing where I am or what I’m doing. I’m far too porous and sensitive and present. I don’t - I can’t deal."

Recent reports have linked Johnson with Machine Gun Kelly. The two were seen leaving the same car and entering a New York apartment owned by Taylor Swift, according to TMZ. Machine Gun Kelly, whose real name is Colson Baker, reportedly first met Johnson at Swift's July wedding to Travis Kelce. Johnson's previous relationship with Chris Martin, with whom she was with for six years, ended in June 2025. Martin has two children, Apple, 22, and Moses, 20, with his ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow. Johnson maintained an amicable relationship with Paltrow and Martin's children during her relationship with the Coldplay frontman. A source close to Johnson stated at the time of their breakup, "Dakota held a flame for them to be together because she loved him so much and loved his kids so much." The source added, "Dakota is devastated that she isn't going to be around his kids as much anymore, but wants them to know that she is always there for them."
