Celine Dion Greets Fans in Paris Amid Comeback Shows

Celine Dion greeted adoring fans in Paris on Friday afternoon, ahead of a comeback performance. The singer, 58, leaned out of her car to wave, assisted by her bodyguard. She wore a stylish faux-fur coat, black trousers, and sunglasses, carrying her belongings in a £2,690 clutch.

Dion is in the French capital for a five-week residency, her first series of concerts since canceling the remainder of her Courage world tour in 2023. She revealed in December 2022 that she had been diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS), a condition causing muscle stiffness and painful spasms that, at its worst, impaired her ability to walk and sing.

During the opening night of her Paris residency, Dion shared an emotional speech, stating that she has decided to make her health battle "my reason for living." She told the audience, "I have promised myself not to cry. Here we are… I'm standing on stage in this city that I love so much, thanks to your support and your love." She acknowledged the difficult journey, describing it as "rocky" and with "unplanned stops," but expressed determination: "I hung in there. A faint ray of light in the distance, deep in the mountains. I believed in it. And here it is. The sun – the sun is here. The sun, right in front of me."

Dion detailed her intense rehabilitation program, which includes medication, physical therapy, vocal therapy, and immunotherapy. She has been undertaking 90-minute Pilates sessions three times a week, along with twice-weekly ballet and barre classes to build strength. Her home gym is equipped with weights, a treadmill, and a reformer machine, and she has noted increased flexibility.

Reflecting on her condition, she stated, "It is a progressive condition. I don't like to say 'disease.'" She laid bare the brutality of SPS in her 2024 documentary, "I Am: Celine Dion." Despite the challenges, Dion has appeared in high spirits during her recent public appearances in Paris. The residency includes 16 shows scheduled for autumn 2026 and 10 additional dates in May 2027. Tickets for her comeback, announced in March, sold out instantly. Dion was diagnosed with SPS in 2022, following a flare-up in 2020. She spent three years largely isolated from fans, partly due to concerns they might assume she was living a full life while canceling shows. During this period, she developed a deep appreciation for nature, viewing barren autumn trees as a metaphor for her struggles. She recalled a moment of realization: "But we did not come for the apples; we came for the tree."
