Actress Carey Mulligan has revealed that she has banned music from being played in her home, despite being married to Marcus Mumford, the lead singer of the English rock band Mumford & Sons. Mulligan, 41, explained that music is too "distracting" for her and her husband.

"If music's on, I want to lean in and listen to it. I can't switch that part of my brain off," Mumford said, detailing how his focus on music can interrupt conversations. "So Carey doesn't like having music in the house because I just stop having a conversation."

Mulligan and Mumford first met as children at a summer camp. They maintained contact through letters before losing touch for about a decade. The couple reconnected as adults when Mulligan was 24 and married in 2012. They share three children: Evelyn, 10, Wilfred, 8, and a daughter born in late 2023. Mulligan previously shared that she did not initially consider Mumford "boyfriend material" when they first met as children. She noted in her diary at the time that while he was the "nicest, the kindest person" she had ever met, he "definitely wasn't boyfriend material."

Despite their childhood acquaintance and subsequent reconnection, they did not date in their teenage years. They re-established contact as adults and discovered they had both been independently hired for the Coen Brothers film Inside Llewyn Davis.
