The Australian reality television series "Bondi Rescue," which has aired on Channel Ten since 2006, has recently been overshadowed by the death of one of its prominent lifeguards, Matt Dee, at the age of 47. His family announced his passing, stating he "touched the lives of many" and would be "deeply missed." Dee, a fan favorite known for his "cheeky humour" and "infectious personality," and "unmistakable Aussie charm," was a regular on the show from 2008 to 2017. He also co-founded the non-profit FTW Revolution and was a Suicide Prevention Australia advocate, motivated by the deaths of his sister and brother due to mental health struggles.

Past Incidents and Legal Issues

The show has a history of challenging events involving its cast members. In the years leading up to Dee's death, other lifeguards have faced significant personal and legal difficulties. In December 2024, Andrew "Reidy" Reid, also 47, was found guilty of common assault in a domestic violence case involving three alleged assaults. He received a 12-month good behavior bond and a two-year apprehended violence order.

In December 2023, the Bondi Rescue crew experienced the theft of two of their essential beach buggies from their tower. One vehicle was later recovered, but the other was never found. The buggies are critical for patrolling the beach and responding to rescues quickly.

Earlier in 2023, former cast member Clint Kimmins revealed he had served jail time at age 22 for glassing a drug dealer in self-defense. Kimmins, who appeared on the show from 2019 to 2022, was later terminated from his lifeguard role in July 2022 after failing to disclose his COVID-19 vaccination status to Waverley Council, an event he described as a "cold" and "disappointing."

Other Tragic Events

The series also mourned the death of lifeguard Terry "T-Mac" McDermott, 63, in September 2022, who passed away after a battle with cancer. McDermott was remembered as a dedicated waterman with over 30 years of service.

In 2016, head lifeguard Bruce "Hoppo" Hopkins was involved in a high-range drink-driving incident. He pleaded guilty, lost his license for 12 months, and attributed the event to the breakdown of his marriage.

Jesse Polock, who left the show in 2019, faced drug possession charges in December of that year after allegedly being found with ketamine and cocaine. While he pleaded guilty to possession, a more serious charge of supplying was later quashed. Polock's lawyer stated he quit his lifeguard role due to the exposure to "numerous suicides and difficult experiences."

Additionally, lifeguard Nicola Atherton spoke in 2016 about her past struggles with addiction to sleeping pills and alcohol, which she sought help for after a severe incident in Bali.
