Walmart has launched a new accessory inspired by its popular $5.97 rotisserie chicken: a handbag designed to resemble the plastic top-handle container the poultry is sold in.
The "Rotisserie Chicken Purse," as it's being called, features a printed image of the rotisserie chicken and bears the "Freshness Guaranteed" private label brand, mimicking the actual food item's packaging. It is available in two colorways: purple trim, referencing the traditional rotisserie chicken, and orange trim, representing the lemon pepper flavor.
In addition to the purse, Walmart has introduced mini bag charms, including miniature hot sauce bottles and tiny rotisserie chickens, to complement the handbag.
The purse became available on Tuesday, September 1, coinciding with National Chicken Month. Walmart has noted the significant popularity of its rotisserie chicken, citing over 15,000 social media mentions in the past year. Kim Tunick, Walmart's Group Director of Brand Experiences and Partnerships, stated that the company wanted to "celebrate this fandom by giving the rotisserie chicken its own moment" and create something customers could "carry with them."
Almost immediately after its release, the purple version of the purse appeared to sell out. Fashion enthusiasts have quickly embraced the accessory, with some declaring it the "it" bag of the season on social media platforms like X. Users have quipped about its affordability and practicality, with one commenter noting it "won't go bad in your fridge" and is "genuinely the better deal" compared to purchasing the chicken itself.
This is not the first time Walmart has generated attention for its handbags. In 2024, the retailer released a $78 handbag that bore a strong resemblance to the luxury Hermès Birkin bag, which typically retails for thousands of dollars.
The "Rotisserie Chicken Purse" is priced at $5.97, the same as the chicken itself.
