The British Film Commission (BFC) has voiced its support for Amazon MGM Studios' proposed expansion of Bray Film Studios in Berkshire. The BFC, a government-funded industry body, stated that the expansion would provide a "considerable boost" to filmmaking in the region and across the UK.
Amazon MGM acquired the Bray Studios site, located in Water Oakley near Windsor, in 2024. The studios were previously owned by Hammer Films, known for its horror productions. The previous owner had secured planning permission for an expansion in 2022. Amazon MGM has been utilizing the site since 2022, and a public consultation on its current expansion plans concluded in May.
Samantha Perahia, the BFC's head of production, informed the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead that the commission supports the project. She noted that the proposed enhancements would not only build upon the region's existing reputation with international clients but also aid the BFC and its partners in marketing the area and the wider UK film industry.
Amazon MGM's current proposals include the construction of a multi-story car park and six new sound stages. The company stated these developments aim to "realise the site's full potential." The expansion is projected to create 470 jobs during the construction phase and an additional 920 jobs within Berkshire more broadly.
The planning application is currently under review and a decision is expected later.
