Tesco is urgently recalling its Finest Mozzarella Pears and Pesto Orzo Salad, with use by dates of August 25, 26, and 27, 2026, over concerns of contamination with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has advised customers not to consume the product and to return it to any Tesco store for a full refund, with no receipt required.

STEC is a strain of E. coli bacteria that can cause severe abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and potentially kidney failure. A small number of individuals, particularly young children, can develop hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious and life-threatening condition. Symptoms typically appear two to four days after infection. Warning signs for this syndrome include decreased urination, fatigue, swelling, and bruising, with children under five being at the highest risk.

E. coli bacteria are naturally found in the environment, food, and the intestines of animals and humans. STEC infections are generally rare, with only a few fatalities recorded annually in England despite numerous reported cases. The FSA issues recall notices when a product poses a public health risk.

This recall follows other recent food safety alerts, including the withdrawal of chicken wraps from Iceland and other convenience stores due to possible bacterial contamination. These incidents come amid a 26 percent rise in STEC infections in England, previously linked to lettuce in pre-packaged sandwiches and wraps. Last year, a significant STEC outbreak in Belgium, believed to be linked to raw minced beef, resulted in ten deaths.

STEC can spread through consuming contaminated food, such as unwashed fruits and vegetables or undercooked meat. It can also be transmitted through direct contact with infected animals or their feces, or via contaminated water. Individuals experiencing STEC symptoms are advised to stay home from work, school, or nursery until symptoms have subsided to prevent further spread.

Tesco has stated that no other products are affected by this recall and has apologized for any inconvenience caused. Customers seeking more information are directed to contact Tesco customer services via its website.
