Standard Life has partnered with a consortium led by private equity firm CVC Capital Partners to establish a new venture focused on pension risk transfers in the United Kingdom. The initiative, announced Tuesday, signifies a significant move into the U.K. retirement services sector.
The partnership has an initial combined commitment of up to $2.72 billion. This collaboration underscores the increasing interest from private capital firms in managing the liabilities associated with U.K. defined benefit pension schemes. These schemes represent a substantial pool of assets and a complex area of financial management for both sponsoring companies and pension fund trustees.
Pension risk transfer, also known as buy-in or buy-out, involves a defined benefit pension scheme purchasing annuities from an insurance company to cover its obligations to retirees. This transaction effectively transfers the financial and longevity risk from the pension scheme's sponsor to the insurer. The U.K. market for such transfers has seen considerable growth as companies seek to de-risk their balance sheets and pension plan sponsors look to secure member benefits.
