Southern California experienced a significant downturn in its hospitality sector throughout August 2026, with numerous restaurants and bars closing their doors. The closures spanned a range of establishments, from decades-old institutions to newer, popular brands, reflecting a challenging economic environment characterized by high overhead, evolving consumer spending patterns, and expiring leases.
Among the notable closures was Sky's Gourmet Tacos in Mid-City Los Angeles, which ceased operations on August 15 after 34 years. The restaurant, known for its Mexican-soul food fusion, cited escalating rent, decreased foot traffic, and increased utility costs as primary reasons for its closure. The brand plans to continue through catering and ghost kitchen services.
In San Diego County, the Breakfast Republic chain closed three of its locations—North Park, Ocean Beach, and Encinitas—on August 9. The operator, Rise & Shine Hospitality Group, attributed these closures to lease expirations and strategic decisions to focus on its more successful locations. Several Breakfast Republic outlets remain operational in areas like East Village, Liberty Station, and Pacific Beach.
The Belmont, a popular West Hollywood bar and nightclub that had been a fixture for 26 years, served its last customers at the end of August. Owner Dylan Leong pointed to rising taxes and labor costs, as well as a perceived lack of city support, as factors in the decision to close. Its closure leaves a notable vacancy in the West Hollywood hospitality scene.
Hard kombucha brand JuneShine also shuttered its remaining company-owned taprooms in Santa Monica and Scripps Ranch on August 28. This move marks the end of its direct-to-consumer hospitality operations, with the company now focusing exclusively on wholesale distribution. Founded in 2018, JuneShine was an early player in the organic hard kombucha market.
Additionally, Hearts Coffee Shop in Van Nuys, a diner that had served the community since 1977, closed its doors on August 9. Owners cited retirement plans, alongside economic pressures, as reasons for ceasing operations. The restaurant was known for its traditional American comfort food and retro atmosphere.
