The Dartford Larder, a social supermarket initiative, has recorded 600 member sign-ups in its inaugural year of operation. Launched in July 2025, the Larder provides low-cost groceries and budgeting guidance to its community.
Operating on a subscription model, members pay £4.50 per week to access essential items, including unlimited fruit and vegetables. The facility, located on Copperfields Walk, is a collaborative effort between Crossways Community Church, the Healthy Living Centre, and Dartford Borough Council.
Stephen Brindley, pastor of Crossways Community Church, stated that the project has successfully met its objective of restoring dignity to individuals. He noted that the subscription system has been well-received by users, who feel they are contributing in return for the support they receive. Brindley highlighted that the social supermarket model has helped to reduce the stigma often associated with traditional food banks.
"The supermarket takes a lot of that away because, at the end of the day, it looks and operates as a normal supermarket," Brindley said. "When we were a food bank, there were many people who would not come through the door because of the stigma which was attached."
Since its opening, the Dartford Larder has distributed over 75,000 items. Brindley expressed satisfaction with the project's impact, stating, "We're just doing it from our heart and our passion and I think it's had a really, really good impact."
