Renault has updated its popular R5 E-Tech electric vehicle, introducing revised battery chemistry, aerodynamic enhancements, and new personalization options. The model, which has faced waiting lists of up to six months, now offers extended range and new color choices, including a scheme inspired by the 1990s Clio Williams hot hatch.

Battery and Range Enhancements

The entry-level R5 Urban Range now provides 196 miles of range, a three-mile increase, by switching to a more energy-dense 36.5kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack. While charging speeds are slightly reduced to a maximum of 80kW on public chargers and 6.6kW on home wallboxes, the more popular 52kWh Comfort Range version sees a notable increase in its official range, extending to 267 miles from 255 miles.

New Styling and Customization

New color options include a shade reminiscent of the Nissan Micra EV's 'Rebel Red.' Customers can also opt for a grey roof or a red '5' decal for the roof. Optional gold wheels will be available on the Techno and Iconic trims. Inside, the cabin's yellow upholstery has been replaced with blue and grey trim.

Technology Updates

Technological updates include the replacement of the Multi-Sense drive-mode selector with a 'Smart' function that automatically adjusts driving modes. Drivers can still manually select modes such as Sport, Eco, Comfort, and Individual via the touchscreen or voice controls. The wireless smartphone charger has also been upgraded to provide up to 50% charge in an hour.

Market Performance

The Renault 5 has distinguished itself in the EV market by attracting a significant number of private buyers. Approximately 60% of UK owners have purchased the vehicle outright, bucking the trend of fleet sales and salary sacrifice schemes common with other electric cars. It was the UK's best-selling electric car last month, attributed to its retro design, driving dynamics, interior features, range, and accessible price point.

Renault has not yet confirmed the on-sale date for the updated R5 in the UK, stating that the changes are currently under review for the market. The R5 launched in 2024 and has since faced increasing competition from retro-styled electric rivals like the Fiat Grande Panda and the forthcoming Volkswagen ID.Polo and Citroen 2CV.
