Jaguar Land Rover has unveiled the Range Rover Electric, marking the debut of a fully electric version of its iconic luxury SUV. The new model, priced from £154,070, aims to blend Range Rover's traditional off-road capability and refined interior with zero-emission powertrain technology. The company anticipates significant interest, with 80,000 customers globally having already registered their interest.

Powertrain and Performance

The Range Rover Electric is built on the brand's MLA platform, which was designed to accommodate various powertrains. It features an 800-volt architecture and dual electric motors, delivering a combined output of 543 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque. This performance is intended to match the V8 petrol variants, offering brisk acceleration that is expected to be around 4.3 seconds for 0-62 mph. Despite its nearly three-tonne weight, engineers have focused on a smooth, linear power delivery to align with the brand's luxury ethos.

Range and Charging

Equipped with a 118.5 kWh battery pack, the Range Rover Electric is rated for an official WLTP range of up to 372 miles. In real-world conditions, Jaguar Land Rover projects a range of approximately 333 miles. The SUV supports DC fast charging, capable of replenishing the battery from 10% to 80% in about 22 minutes. A ten-minute charge can add up to 137 miles of range, according to the manufacturer. The battery system is managed by JLR's ThermAssist heat management system and comes with an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty.

Design and Capability

Externally, the electric Range Rover is designed to be almost identical to its combustion-engine counterparts, with subtle changes like a blanked-off grille and revised wheel designs for improved aerodynamics. The interior also retains the familiar luxury appointments, including the central transmission tunnel which houses battery management components. The vehicle maintains the brand's signature off-road prowess, including a 900mm wading depth. Engineers have focused on lowering the center of gravity by integrating the battery pack into the chassis, contributing to a more agile feel despite the vehicle's size.

Market Position and Availability

The Range Rover Electric enters the market at a significant premium. The entry-level Autobiography SWB model costs £154,070, approximately £26,500 more than the equivalent diesel version. Long-wheelbase variants, such as the EV550 SV, will be priced higher, reaching £215,670. Jaguar Land Rover expects about 70% of the electric model's customers to be new to the brand, with only one in five currently driving an electric vehicle. First customer deliveries are anticipated in early 2027. The vehicle will be assembled at JLR's Solihull factory, with battery packs sourced from Tata's new gigafactory in Somerset and electric motors produced in Wolverhampton.
