Publix has eliminated the traditional 10-item limit from its express checkout lanes, a move the grocery chain states is intended to provide employees with more flexibility in managing customer flow and potentially reduce wait times. Previously, signs in these lanes indicated "10 items or less," but these are reportedly being replaced with signs that simply read "express."

A company spokesperson told Fox News Digital that the updated express lane process "is focused on reducing wait times and ensuring customers can be served as efficiently as possible" rather than adhering to a specific item count. This change allows employees to consider factors such as store traffic and order complexity when directing customers.

The grocery chain, which operates over 1,400 supermarkets across eight Southeastern states, also offers self-checkout stations as an alternative for shoppers with smaller purchases. It remains unclear if this policy change applies to all Publix locations or when it officially took effect.

The shift away from a strict item limit has prompted discussion among shoppers online. Some question whether removing the limit will undermine the purpose of an express lane, while others believe that the number of items does not always correlate with transaction time and that the change could be beneficial for quicker orders.
