P.F. Chang’s has closed its Fashion Island location in Newport Beach, California, after 32 years of operation. The Asian-inspired chain served its last meals at the ritzy shopping center last week, marking an abrupt end for the popular restaurant.

Red and white signs declaring "Permanently Closed" were visible on the restaurant's glass doors. The closure has left many of the establishment's employees only learning of the news after their final shift, according to local reports.

Shift at Fashion Island

The closure of P.F. Chang's marks the latest departure of a well-known casual dining establishment from Fashion Island. Both The Cheesecake Factory and California Pizza Kitchen, which were also long-standing fixtures at the mall, have previously vacated their spaces. This pattern suggests a potential reshaping of the shopping destination by its owner, the Irvine Company, towards trendier and higher-end options.

For decades, these three restaurants were considered central to the Fashion Island dining experience. Now, all three spaces are vacant. Social media accounts dedicated to local history have noted the departures, with one post marking P.F. Chang's closure as the end of an era for the trio that had dominated a corner of the retail center for approximately three decades.

California Pizza Kitchen closed between 1988 and 2021, followed by The Cheesecake Factory between 1993 and 2023, and P.F. Chang's from 1994 to 2026.

New Establishments Emerge

As these longtime eateries depart, new establishments are moving into the shopping center. The Spanish tapas restaurant Telefèric Barcelona recently opened in the former space of Hopdoddy Burger. Additionally, Levain Bakery, a New York-based bakery known for its large cookies, is slated to open in September.

Representatives for P.F. Chang’s and the Irvine Company did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the closure and future plans for the spaces.
