Initial public offerings for artificial intelligence companies OpenAI and Anthropic are projected to unlock an estimated $430 billion in charity pledges, a philanthropic surge comparable to the wealth distributed by American tycoons during the Gilded Age.
With each company's impending IPO expected to generate over $1 trillion, both OpenAI and Anthropic have committed to donating significant portions of their value. This could result in an unprecedented wave of giving that benefits charities worldwide, according to The Economist.
"This could be a moment where hundreds of millions of lives can be improved, and there may not be many moments like that in history," said Nick Allardice of GiveDirectly, an organization that distributes cash to individuals in poverty.
Anthropic's seven co-founders have pledged to give away 80% of their wealth, which is expected to contribute approximately $110 billion to charitable causes. An additional $60 billion is anticipated to come from employees' donor-advised funds, with the company matching their workers' charitable contributions.
OpenAI's non-profit OpenAI Foundation, which utilizes the company's substantial resources for large-scale philanthropic grants, holds 26% of OpenAI's stock. This stake could yield an estimated $260 billion for charitable distribution.
Historical Parallels
The combined charitable funds from OpenAI and Anthropic represent about 1.3% of the total U.S. Gross Domestic Product. This scale of giving echoes the substantial contributions made by foundations like Ford, Rockefeller, and Carnegie in the late 19th and mid-20th centuries.
These potential donations also significantly surpass the philanthropic wave generated during the internet boom, when companies collectively gave away approximately $230 billion between 1990 and 2018, as reported by The Economist.
Uncertainties and Current Trends
However, the exact amount of these future donations is not yet guaranteed. The IPO valuations for both OpenAI and Anthropic are subject to market fluctuations, and no firm dates have been set for their public offerings. It remains to be seen whether the companies, their leadership, and employees will fully commit to their pledged donation amounts, though current indicators suggest a positive outlook.
Big tech companies often direct their funds toward tangible initiatives aimed at societal benefit. For instance, OpenAI, Anthropic, and the payment firm Stripe recently collaborated on a $500 million donation to support research for a vaccine against cold and flu viruses.
Coefficient Giving, a philanthropic advising and funding organization, reported assisting in the distribution of $1 billion in the first half of the current year, matching its total for all of the previous year. The organization also announced an increased commitment of $1 billion to GiveWell, another charity.
