O'Charley's, a restaurant chain with a 55-year history, has closed all of its remaining locations nationwide. The closures took effect on Wednesday, September 9, impacting all 52 restaurants that were in operation earlier this year.
Social media platforms and the company's website were disabled shortly after the shutdown. The abrupt closure came as a surprise to many employees, some of whom received little to no notice.
"It was just really a bummer," said former employee Leslie Bolin, recalling the shock and sadness among staff. "Like, I have friends who have said that they’ve been crying, they can’t sleep because so many memories built there over the years, and it’s, it’s hard to see it go."
O'Charley's was a popular spot known for its Southern-inspired menu, including its hand-breaded chicken tenders, honey mustard dressing, and complimentary rolls. The chain served customers across 13 states in the South and Midwest.
Customers expressed their dismay over the sudden closure, with some heading to locations for a final meal. "I am just sick that O’Charley’s has closed as of today. It was my favorite place to eat in Dickson. I am also saddened for all the people that have suddenly lost their jobs," wrote one diner.
The restaurant was founded in 1971 by Charles Watkins near Vanderbilt University. It was later acquired and expanded by David Watchel, eventually growing to nearly 55 locations by the current year.
