Northwest Naturals is voluntarily recalling approximately 1,956 pounds of its raw cat and dog food products due to potential contamination with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. The recall, announced by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), follows federal testing that identified the presence of these bacteria in two chicken-based recipes.

The affected products include 53 cases of Northwest Naturals Frozen Chicken Recipe, totaling 1,272 pounds, and 19 cases of Northwest Naturals Frozen Raw Diet for Dogs Chicken Recipe, totaling 684 pounds. The Frozen Chicken Recipe, marketed for cats and as a protein topper for dogs, tested positive for Salmonella. The 6-pound Frozen Raw Diet for Dogs Chicken Recipe tested positive for both Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes.

The recalled products were distributed nationwide to retail stores. The specific product details are: the 2-pound Frozen Chicken Recipe with lot number B-5, best-by date of Jan. 26, 2028, and UPC 087316384956; and the 6-pound Frozen Raw Diet for Dogs Chicken Recipe with lot number B-19, best-by date of Jan. 25, 2028, and UPC 087316380392.

Salmonella and Listeria can cause serious health issues in both pets and humans. Symptoms in pets can include lethargy, diarrhea (potentially bloody), fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, and abdominal pain. Infected animals can also spread the bacteria to people or other animals through contact.

As of Aug. 28, Northwest Naturals stated that no illnesses had been reported in connection with this recall. However, the company advises consumers who have purchased the affected products to stop feeding them to their pets immediately. Affected products should be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Northwest Naturals also recommends that consumers handle raw pet food with care. This includes thoroughly washing hands after handling the food and cleaning and sanitizing all bowls, utensils, surfaces, and storage areas that come into contact with the recalled products.
