Nissan and McLaren Announce Major Investments in UK Car Industry

Nissan and McLaren have announced a combined investment of nearly £700 million in their UK operations, signaling a significant boost for the British car industry.

Japanese automaker Nissan will invest £170 million in its Sunderland plant to build its new hybrid Kicks model. This investment is expected to secure jobs at the North East facility, which has faced challenges.

In parallel, luxury sports car manufacturer McLaren unveiled plans to invest £500 million across its UK sites by 2032, creating approximately 1,000 new jobs. The funds will be allocated to its production center in Woking, Surrey, and its manufacturing and research base in South Yorkshire.

These announcements come at a critical time for the UK automotive sector, which is navigating subdued demand, the transition to electric vehicles, and increasing competition from Chinese manufacturers. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) described the investments as a major boost for the industry and the wider economy.

"Two major announcements in one day from Nissan and McLaren are a major boost for the industry and wider economy," said SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes. "New investment, new products and new jobs underline the fundamental strength of UK automotive manufacturing and its ability to deliver growth, innovation and high-value employment across the country."

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds hailed the investments, calling Nissan's contribution a significant development for British manufacturing. "Nissan has been at the heart of British manufacturing for four decades, with Sunderland producing millions of vehicles, supporting thousands of skilled jobs and helping establish the North East as a global automotive powerhouse," Reynolds stated.

McLaren's commitment was also welcomed by local leaders. Andy Burnham, visiting McLaren's Woking base, described the investment as a "huge vote of confidence in Britain from McLaren, one of our world-class manufacturers." He added that the company is "doubling down on Britain, keeping the design, the engineering and the building of every future car here."

The automotive industry in Europe, including Germany where Volkswagen is cutting jobs, is facing similar pressures. Ford's European boss, Jim Baumbick, recently called for a "level playing field" to address the influx of lower-priced vehicles from China.

Nissan has been a cornerstone of British manufacturing for 40 years, with its Sunderland plant producing millions of vehicles and supporting thousands of jobs. McLaren, a producer of high-performance sports cars, is expanding its operations and research capabilities within the UK.
