Monzo's New Aura Card Offers AI Perks and Cashback for a Monthly Fee

Monzo has introduced Aura, a new metal credit card that includes subscriptions to Apple TV and Google AI Plus, alongside an automated cashback investment feature. The card is designed to assist customers with financial administration by automatically investing earned cashback into a range of funds through Monzo Investments or allowing it to be paid out directly.

Aura offers cardholders 1% cashback on grocery purchases and 0.5% on all other spending, with no spending cap. However, the card carries a monthly fee of £15, totaling £180 annually. To recoup this fee solely through cashback, a significant amount of spending would be required. For instance, a monthly spend of £750 on groceries and £1,500 on other items would generate approximately £15 in cashback.

Monzo states that the combined value of the card's perks, including the subscription services and airport lounge access, exceeds £360 per year. The Apple TV subscription alone is valued at £9.99 per month, and Google AI Plus at £4.49 per month. Cardholders also receive two airport lounge passes and two fast-track passes every 12 months.

Monzo highlights Aura as the first UK credit card to automatically invest cashback. Luke Enock, representing Monzo, noted that customers seek products offering both immediate advantages and long-term financial growth. The Aura card could encourage individuals attracted to cashback and rewards to begin investing.

Despite Monzo waiving its platform fee for investments when using the Aura card, the £15 monthly charge is considered a substantial cost for initiating an investment habit. The card’s representative APR is 64.2% variable, with a purchase interest rate of 29% variable. While cashback and other rewards can offset some of the fee, individuals who do not anticipate earning at least £15 in cashback monthly or fully utilizing the provided perks might find dedicated, fee-free investment platforms a more economical alternative for starting to invest.

For those interested in investing, platforms like Freetrade, InvestEngine, and Trading 212 are suggested for beginners, offering options for setting up small, regular monthly investments. These platforms provide guides for novice investors.

When considering credit cards, it is important to compare options and understand the associated costs. Credit cards are a form of borrowing, and spending should be managed responsibly. Aura offers a three-month interest-free period for purchases exceeding £100, which can be useful for spreading costs. While perks can be attractive, their value should outweigh any fees or interest charges. It is advisable to check eligibility before applying and to set up direct debits to clear the balance monthly, thereby avoiding high interest rates. Some credit cards offer cashback without a monthly fee, though it may be accrued annually rather than paid out directly. Competitor cards, such as the Lloyds Ultra Credit Card and American Express cards, offer different cashback structures and introductory incentives, with varying annual fees and reward schemes.
