Mony Group, the parent company of MoneySuperMarket and MoneySavingExpert, has saved British consumers approximately £2.8 billion over the past year, according to Chief Executive Peter Duffy. This figure represents a significant contribution to households navigating the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

Duffy stated that nearly 13 million active customers utilized the company's platforms last year. "Real people can’t afford to waste money on policies that don’t meet their needs in the most effective way, at any time," he said, emphasizing the importance of avoiding overpayment during financially challenging periods.

The company is seeing increased consumer interest in switching energy providers, with a 30 percent rise in those looking to change suppliers following a 13 percent increase in the energy price cap in July, which raised the annual cost for a typical dual-fuel household to £1,663.

Duffy also commented on his working relationship with consumer advocate Martin Lewis, founder of MoneySavingExpert. He described Lewis as a passionate campaigner dedicated to empowering consumers, ensuring they are not overcharged, and helping them understand complex financial products. "He does a brilliant job, which is why he is one of the most trusted," Duffy said of Lewis. Mony Group, which traces its roots back 40 years to Mortgage 2000, evolved into Moneysupermarket.com in the late 1990s before its stock market flotation in 2007. The company acquired MoneySavingExpert.com for £87 million in 2012 and rebranded as Mony Group two years ago.

Duffy, who took the helm in 2020, noted his background shapes his approach to leading an organization that assists ordinary families. Mony Group reported record revenues of £227 million in the first half of this year. Despite these financial results, the company's share price has declined by one-third since Duffy assumed leadership.

Concerns about the impact of artificial intelligence on Mony's business model and rising pay-per-click (PPC) advertising costs have contributed to the stock's performance. Duffy acknowledged these challenges, explaining that PPC inflation has reduced the company's gross profit margin. In response, Mony is focusing on building stronger customer relationships beyond transactional interactions through initiatives like its SuperSaveClub loyalty program.

Duffy is also embracing AI, highlighting the company's new AI-enabled ChatGPT app designed to streamline the customer experience and reduce friction. He expressed skepticism about consumers using general AI tools to find deals independently, citing the regulated nature of financial services and the sensitive personal data involved. "We've got a deep moat here. Everything we do is regulated," Duffy asserted.

As an example of AI implementation, Duffy pointed to the Price Optimiser for car insurance, which has helped 200,000 customers save an average of £25 over the last six months. Mony also encourages staff to manage their own finances through a dedicated workshop, with Duffy himself participating and noting personal savings. "We're helping people save more money than they used to," he said, while also acknowledging that "there are still too many people who pay the cost of inertia, and that can be very expensive."
