McDonald's has confirmed the existence of its legendary 'McGold Card,' a coveted item long rumored to grant its holders free food for life. For the first time, nine Australians will have the opportunity to join this elite club through a month-long promotion in September.

The McGold Card has become a significant piece of McDonald's lore, with stories circulating about a select few individuals, including celebrities and billionaires, possessing the golden card. Investor Warren Buffett has publicly stated he owns a version that allows him to eat for free at McDonald's restaurants in his hometown of Omaha, and he claimed his friend Bill Gates had a similar card with global usage.

Actor Rob Lowe also revealed his own version on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!", though his card reportedly had a one-year limit and was tied to a specific franchise. These anecdotal accounts have contributed to the card's mythical status, with its rarity making it an unofficial status symbol.

McDonald's Australia will be giving away nine McGold Cards via its MyMacca's App throughout September. Each day, customers can access a different 'Golden Deal' within the app, featuring discounts such as a $3 Big Mac or a $2.50 McFlurry. Making a purchase of an eligible deal will also enter customers into the running to win a McGold Card.

"The McGold Card has become the ultimate piece of Macca's lore around the world, so we're incredibly excited to finally bring it to Australia and give our fans the chance to get their hands on one," said Annabel Fribence, McDonald's Australia chief marketing officer.

A Card Hunt at Bondi Beach

One of the nine McGold Cards will be awarded through a special event at Bondi Beach on September 4. Participants will use metal detectors to search the sand for hidden tokens near the North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club. While some tokens will yield food vouchers or merchandise, others will secure a spot in a grand finale later that day. The finalists will then compete to find the "missing" McGold Card, with one winner claiming the lifetime supply of free McDonald's.

The promotion comes at a time when many Australians are reportedly becoming more budget-conscious about discretionary spending, including casual dining.

The remaining McGold Cards will be available through purchases of eligible Golden Deals made via the MyMacca's App starting September 1. The promotion highlights a unique approach to customer engagement, transforming a piece of fast-food folklore into an attainable prize for everyday customers.
