Vocalink, the payments company owned by Mastercard that processes a large volume of salaries, household bills, and state benefits, has returned to profitability. The firm reported a pre-tax profit of £7.3 million for the last fiscal year, a notable recovery from a £10.7 million loss recorded in 2024.
This turnaround was achieved despite a 4% decrease in sales, which amounted to £212 million. Vocalink generates revenue by applying a small fee to the billions of transactions it processes annually. The company's infrastructure also supports the current account switching service.
Mastercard is currently exploring the sale of a majority stake in Vocalink. The potential sale aims to transfer the strategically important asset back to British banks, thereby alleviating concerns over its ownership by a U.S.-based entity. Recently, Vocalink appointed former HMRC chief Sir Jonathan Thompson as its chairman, succeeding Mastercard's Tim Murphy in the role.
