Marks & Spencer has introduced its own-brand pet food range, Paws & Pals, for cats and dogs, marking a significant step in its strategy to attract more shoppers for their regular grocery needs. The launch aims to position the retailer as a more comprehensive destination for essential household purchases beyond its traditional strengths in areas like picnic fare and baked goods.
This expansion into pet food comes as M&S Food experiences a notable sales increase. According to market researchers Worldpanel by Numerator, grocery sales at the company rose 15.9% in the 12 weeks leading up to August 10, compared to the same period last year. This growth rate places M&S ahead of most competitors, with online grocer Ocado showing the next highest growth at 13.1%.
Alex Freudmann, M&S Food managing director, stated that the company is focused on becoming a "true shopping-list retailer," making it more convenient for customers to complete more of their weekly shopping at M&S. He highlighted that pets are an integral part of millions of households, underscoring the rationale behind the new product line.
The company has also been working to appeal to customers seeking basic grocery staples by offering larger pack sizes for items such as eggs and avocados. These efforts appear to be resonating with shoppers, contributing to the recent sales boom, which was further bolstered during recent warm weather.
In conjunction with these strategic moves, Marks & Spencer's shares saw an increase of 2.1% recently. The company's ongoing efforts to broaden its grocery appeal signal a commitment to enhancing its market position in the competitive retail landscape.
