Marks & Spencer's autumn collection is drawing significant attention from the fashion world, including Vogue editors, for its blend of style and affordability. The brand has seen a steady improvement in its designs over the past four years, with this season marking a notable acceleration in its fashion evolution.
Maddy Evans, who joined M&S in 2019, has been instrumental in the brand's design transformation. This year has seen M&S host its first cruise collection event in Ibiza and a 'catwalk' show at Silverstone, adopting formats similar to high-fashion designers.
Key Pieces and Pricing Strategy
A substantial 55 percent of the new collection is priced at £30 or less, with 74 percent of outerwear items available for under £70. This strategy aims to provide fashionable choices for consumers on a budget. Among the highlighted pieces are the Autograph tan cashmere crew neck for £90, M&S woven black flat pumps at £50, rhinestone mesh pumps for £55, and straight jeans priced at £26, which are noted for their vintage appearance.
The September issue of British Vogue featured a pair of M&S £28 wide-leg ecru jeans alongside luxury designer clothing, signaling the brand's growing fashion credibility. Furthermore, M&S is set to participate in London Fashion Week for the first time.
A YouGov report identified M&S as the number one UK fashion retailer in terms of style perception, and the brand is now focusing on creating eye-catching yet accessible fashion.
New Silhouettes and Tailoring
The collection introduces new interpretations of everyday workwear. A one-button, stand-up collar blazer in sculptural grey, priced at £58, is noted for its resemblance to designer pieces. It can be paired with a red funnel neck sweater (£95) and camel-colored chinos with an inverted side pleat (£35), creating a modern silhouette of a slim jacket with fuller trousers.
Another daywear option includes a chunky-lapelled blazer in donkey brown (£70), worn with a pale striped shirt (£18) and cargo pants (£38). Footwear, such as the M&S woven black flat pump (£50), is also drawing comparisons to high-end brands.
For suiting, a double-breasted pinstripe suit, comprising an £85 blazer and £46 wide pleat-front trousers, is presented as a refined take on the classic style. Skirt options include a heavy satin lilac grey skirt (£60) paired with a crème caramel blouse (£60) and a patchwork fur blouson jacket (£225), offering an elegant yet playful ensemble suitable for both office and evening wear.
Fabric Quality and Innovation
Improvements in fabric quality are noted, with real cashmere available for £90. A grey funnel neck sweater (£45) is highlighted for its luxurious feel, with experts reportedly unable to distinguish it from cashmere. An ivory crop jacket (£58), made from a polyester-viscose mix, mimics the appearance of silk shantung. A black heavy midi skirt, priced at £40, also features a satin-like fabric.
Focus on Separates and Denim
While the market for dresses is reportedly down, M&S is prioritizing versatile separates, particularly tailoring and jeans, for the upcoming season. The brand anticipates selling 3 million pairs of jeans between September and December, with a focus on barrel or balloon styles. The best-selling straight jean, a mid-wash vintage-look pair, is available for £26.
Footwear and Accessories
There has been a notable shift away from trainers towards shoes, with increased investment in M&S's footwear and bag offerings. The collection includes black cone-heeled knee boots (£140) and mesh pumps with rhinestones (£55) designed for party wear. While some bag offerings are still developing, the overall collection is described as polished and fashionable without being intimidating.
