Ikea is implementing significant price cuts on a range of popular products across Europe, including the iconic Billy bookcase and Kallax storage units. The move by the Swedish furniture retailer aims to support customers grappling with the rising cost of living.
The company is investing €1.2 billion (£1 billion) in these price reductions, which in some cases amount to decreases of up to 28%. Ikea stated that these cuts were made possible by achieving savings throughout its supply chain, such as reducing packaging costs.
Juvencio Maeztu, chief executive of Ingka, the franchisee operating most of Ikea's European stores, described the initiative as a long-term commitment rather than a short-term campaign. "It's about making IKEA more affordable when people need it most, even if it means accepting a lower margin," Maeztu said. "The cost of living is increasing and it's getting tougher and tougher for many people."
He emphasized the importance of providing affordable solutions for home organization, noting that for many individuals, home may be a room in a shared house. "For many people, home is a bedroom in a shared house, and it's even more important to offer storage and organised solutions."
Ikea has experienced a decline in revenue over the past two years, attributed to the reduced purchasing power of consumers due to inflation. Despite previously implementing price reductions that impacted the company's revenue and profit in its most recent earnings report, the company is undertaking this substantial investment to remain accessible to cash-strapped customers.
