Geely's EX2 electric hatchback, which achieved significant sales success in China, has now arrived in the United Kingdom. In China, the EX2 was the country's best-selling new car in 2025, with over 465,000 units delivered. The vehicle's popularity in its home market was largely attributed to its spacious interior, extensive equipment, and exceptionally low price, starting from approximately £7,000.
Pricing and Range Concerns
However, the UK pricing presents a stark contrast. The EX2 starts at £20,990 for the Pro trim, a figure considerably higher than its Chinese counterpart. Even Geely's optimistic prediction of a 5% market share in the UK acknowledges the car's competitive positioning. The entry-level Pro model features a 35kWh battery and an 81bhp motor, offering a 0-62mph time of 14.2 seconds and an official range of only 155 miles. Real-world range is expected to be even lower, a figure considered dated by current EV standards.
The more popular mid-spec Max trim, starting at £23,490, offers a 47kWh battery and a 114bhp motor, improving acceleration to 11.5 seconds for 0-62mph and extending the range to 214 miles. The top-tier Ultra model, priced at £25,490, shares the same battery and motor specifications but includes additional luxury features. Despite the increased range, all EX2 variants fall short of the mileages offered by many of its direct competitors in the UK market.
Design and Interior Space
The EX2's exterior design is described as inoffensive and somewhat anonymous, with a bulbous, soft-edged profile. It stands taller than many competitors, measuring 4.1 meters long and 1.8 meters wide, with a wheelbase of 2.65 meters, placing it in size comparison with models like the Renault 4 crossover.
Inside, the EX2's standout feature is its exceptional interior space, which has been likened to a "Tardis." The cabin offers ample head and legroom for adults in both the front and rear seats, with considerable elbow room. Storage is also a strong point, featuring numerous cubbies and a 70-litre 'frunk' under the bonnet, in addition to a 375-litre boot, which is competitive within its segment. However, the boot's low floor can make loading heavier items difficult, and the Ultra trim's powered tailgate can be finicky if the parcel shelf is not correctly positioned.
Equipment and Technology
Reflecting a common strategy among Chinese car manufacturers, the EX2 comes heavily equipped as standard. Even the base Pro model includes keyless entry, LED lighting, a reversing camera, heated power-folding mirrors, and 16-inch alloy wheels. The interior boasts faux leather upholstery, electric front seats, climate control, a 14.6-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an 8.8-inch digital driver's display. Higher trims add features such as a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera, heated seats and steering wheel, and premium audio systems.
Driving Dynamics and Ride Comfort
While Geely is part of the same ownership group as Lotus, the EX2's chassis was reportedly tuned for European roads by Lotus engineers, but performance is not its forte. The car exhibits a noticeable lack of initial acceleration from a standstill, requiring drivers to plan maneuvers carefully, especially in Eco or Comfort modes. While it gains momentum once moving, particularly in Sport mode, its overall driving experience is described as unengaging. The steering is light and vague around town, though this contributes to its maneuverability in tight spaces.
Ride comfort is a strong suit, with the EX2 handling uneven surfaces and potholes competently. However, the vehicle's Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) have been criticized for being overly intrusive, particularly the lane-keep assist and driver-attention monitoring. Geely has indicated that these systems can be adjusted via software updates.
Market Positioning and Value
At its current pricing, the Geely EX2 faces stiff competition from established EV players. While its extensive standard equipment and spacious interior are advantages, its shorter range and less distinctive design may deter buyers, especially when compared to rivals that offer longer ranges and more character for a comparable price, even after factoring in government incentives. Geely is offering 0% APR financing, which could provide a competitive edge for those looking to finance or lease their next vehicle.
