Enzo Fernandez informed Chelsea that his relationship with the team's changing room was broken and beyond repair as he pursued a move to Manchester City, according to Stamford Bridge insiders. The 25-year-old Argentine reportedly communicated this sentiment to the club while also revealing private conversations with his former head coach, Enzo Maresca. He is also said to have submitted two written transfer requests before his £125 million transfer to Manchester City was finalized on deadline day.
Daily Mail Sport attempted to contact Fernandez's representative for comment.
The report comes as Chelsea announced a new contract for Pedro Neto, a move partly attributed to his loyalty after Manchester City also expressed interest in the 26-year-old Portuguese winger over the summer. Unlike Fernandez, who did not agree to an extension with Chelsea despite previous talks, Neto has signed a six-year deal, including a pay rise and an option for a sixth year. Neto's new contract follows similar agreements for Joao Pedro, Reece James, Moises Caicedo, and Cole Palmer, with other players expected to receive improved terms in the future, including Levi Colwill.
Neto has been a standout performer under new manager Xabi Alonso this season, featuring primarily as a wing-back and scoring two goals in five appearances across all competitions. Alonso recently praised Neto's qualities and his ability to connect with his teammates.
Fernandez's tenure at Chelsea had previously become strained last season when he was suspended for two games after making public comments about Real Madrid. The Spanish club subsequently issued a statement denying any interest in the player.
Manchester City, however, maintained their pursuit of Fernandez throughout the summer, with the £125 million deal ultimately completed in the final days of the transfer window to secure Maresca's top target. Fernandez is now set to participate in his first Manchester derby this Sunday.
