Clearlake Capital Completes Full Acquisition of Chelsea Football Club
US-based investors Todd Boehly and Mark Walter, along with Hansjorg Wyss, have divested their stakes to the private equity firm.
Clearlake Capital has acquired full control of Chelsea Football Club, as stated by BBC Sport. Chairman Todd Boehly, director Mark Walter, and Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss have sold their respective stakes in the club to the private equity firm, which is led by co-founders Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano.
Boehly, Walter, and Wyss each held a 12.8% stake in the club, while Clearlake Capital previously owned 61.5%. Boehly, who co-owns the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball franchise, had served as Chelsea's chairman since the consortium purchased the club for £2.3 billion from Roman Abramovich in 2022. Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK government in March 2022.
Reports in August indicated that Boehly and Walter were exploring the sale of their stakes. Discussions within the ownership group reportedly began after a disagreement, which became apparent in 2024, led both parties to consider buying each other out. Boehly expressed that it had been an honor to serve as Chelsea chairman and valued his partnership with Clearlake. He stated his confidence that the club is well-positioned for continued success under Clearlake's leadership.
