China's passenger car exports for the first eight months of 2024 have already surpassed the total for all of last year, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM). This surge is largely propelled by robust sales of plug-in hybrid and pure electric vehicles.
In August alone, passenger car exports rose by 67.1% compared to the same month in 2023, reaching approximately 890,000 units. Cumulatively, China exported over 6.2 million passenger vehicles between January and August of this year. For comparison, total vehicle exports for all of last year reached 7.1 million, with approximately 6 million being passenger vehicles.
Industry analysts anticipate China's passenger vehicle exports could see a full-year growth of 50% to 70%. This strong export performance is expected to largely offset a significant decline in domestic sales. In August, China's domestic passenger car sales fell 25.6% year-on-year, with just under 1.5 million vehicles sold. This downturn in the home market is attributed to intense competition, ongoing price wars, and weakened consumer confidence stemming from a slowing economy.
Stephen Chan, an associate director at S&P Global Ratings, noted that competitive pricing and improving quality have contributed to the strong export figures. "It's likely that strong export growth will largely mitigate the domestic weakness," he said.
Global factors, including the rising fuel prices, have also encouraged a shift towards electric vehicles among consumers worldwide. While significant U.S. tariffs have largely excluded Chinese passenger cars from the American market, Chinese automakers are seeing increased sales and establishing a growing presence in Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Many Chinese manufacturers are also expanding their global footprint by setting up overseas factories and increasing local assembly and manufacturing operations. This strategy aims to mitigate the impact of trade barriers and reduce logistical costs, further driven by weak domestic demand.
