Blue Apron is experiencing significant customer dissatisfaction due to missing ingredients, delayed orders, and damaged food, stemming from a major supply chain disruption. These issues arose after FreshRealm, the company's primary supplier, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this year.

In an effort to manage the fallout, Blue Apron partnered with Misfits Market in April. Misfits Market assumed distribution, including operations at a fulfillment center in Tracy, California, in a rapid transition. However, this handover has led to widespread customer complaints, with boxes arriving late, missing essential ingredients, or containing spoiled items.

A Misfits Market spokesperson indicated that such a large-scale transition typically takes about a year, but the company was attempting to complete it in under 10 weeks, creating substantial inventory and fulfillment challenges. Blue Apron has acknowledged these difficulties, attributing them to the accelerated shift to its new fulfillment partner.

In an Instagram post on August 14, Blue Apron stated, "To say that it has not gone smoothly would be an understatement," admitting that the transition has led to delivery problems and missing ingredients. The company announced plans to temporarily limit its menu options and implement additional quality-control checks to prevent faulty shipments.

Long-time customers have been particularly vocal, sharing their experiences on social media. Some customers have reported receiving boxes with missing proteins but containing unexpected extra items, such as unusually large vegetables. Others have posted images of damaged products, leaking packaging, and opened or spoiled produce.

While Blue Apron has reportedly offered refunds and credits for affected orders, some customers consider these ongoing issues to be the final straw after a perceived gradual decline in service quality. One customer expressed frustration on Reddit, calling it "a bizarre way to destroy a company, its reputation, and brand loyalty."

Blue Apron, once a prominent name in the meal-kit industry, was valued at nearly $2 billion in 2017. The company was acquired by Wonder Group in 2023 and now operates as a subsidiary. Court filings from FreshRealm's bankruptcy proceedings revealed Blue Apron's significant reliance on its supplier, with FreshRealm fulfilling approximately 60,000 meal kits and prepared meals weekly for Blue Apron, which accounted for about 70 percent of FreshRealm's revenue.
