Marcia Kilgore, a beauty industry veteran with three decades of experience, asserts that consumers are significantly overpaying for skincare products. Her company, Beauty Pie, founded in 2016, operates on a membership model designed to provide access to prestige-quality cosmetics at substantially lower prices.
Kilgore's journey into the beauty world began with her own skin concerns, leading her to establish Bliss Spa in New York in 1996. The spa gained popularity among celebrities and was featured in an episode of "Sex and the City." Following the spa's success, Kilgore launched product lines derived from Bliss Spa, including Soap & Glory and Soaper Duper, and also co-founded the footwear brand FitFlop. These ventures provided her with deep insights into product formulation, manufacturing, and retail markups.
She estimates that typical beauty products are sold at 12 times the cost of their formula. Beauty Pie aims to circumvent this by cutting out traditional retail markups, celebrity endorsements, and excessive packaging. Customers pay an annual fee of £59 for unlimited access to purchase products at member prices, which are described as being only three to four times the formula cost. Non-members can still purchase products at full price, which are still considered reasonable.
Kilgore emphasizes that Beauty Pie sources effective and elegant formulas, with unfussy yet chic packaging. Despite some products seeing price increases due to rising ingredient costs and adjustments to the membership model, Kilgore maintains that the company's core mission remains to offer value. For instance, rising ingredient prices for active components like microencapsulated retinol and spicules have contributed to higher costs. Beauty Pie also has a retail presence in London's Liberty store, which Kilgore describes as a pop-up for customers to experience products before purchasing.
Kilgore notes that consumers are increasingly scrutinizing ingredient lists and questioning product value, a trend that aligns with Beauty Pie's transparent pricing strategy. She remains dedicated to challenging the "deeply held belief that if something doesn’t cost a lot of money it can’t be good," asserting that Beauty Pie demonstrates this is not the case. Her own skincare routine includes evening cleansing, LED mask treatments, and the daily use of retinoids, niacinamide, and vitamin C, along with consistent SPF application. Kilgore also avoids tanning and smoking.
Notable fans of Beauty Pie include Reese Witherspoon and Hailey Bieber. Kilgore believes luxury brands have not publicly challenged her claims about inflated pricing because they recognize the truth in her assertions. She has pointed to comparisons between Beauty Pie's Le Masque Micro-Caviar (£35 for members) and Dior Prestige Le Micro-Caviar de Rose (£418) as an example of the vast price disparities for similar products.
