Anthropic President Daniela Amodei and her husband, Holden Karnofsky, incorporated a peculiar theme into their 2017 wedding, encouraging guests to create "romantic hookups" between stuffed animals and engage with inanimate objects. According to an archived wedding webpage detailing the event's plans, guests were provided with small stuffed animals and "bio cards," with prizes awarded for the most imaginative pairings.
The wedding webpage stated, "Every guest will receive a small stuffed animal with a bio card, and there will be prizes for the people who arrange the most romantic hookups between the different characters." Guests were also encouraged to "talk to the chairs, your entree, the groom, etc." The celebration was described as a "wacky time" where attendees were advised to "Leave your judgment and prudence at home: every idiotic thing you do at our wedding will just make it that much more memorable."
Karnofsky, a former nonprofit executive, also detailed in an archived blog post how he proposed to Amodei with a 100-minute film he created using approximately 50 stuffed animals. He stated that he and Amodei spend more time playing with stuffed animals than "anyone I know of who's over the age of 9."
This revelation follows previous reports about Anthropic's leadership, including claims that the company's chatbot Claude is conscious and lobbying efforts to encourage religious scholars to accept this idea. Anthropic also implemented a policy barring users from abusive behavior toward its AI models.
During their time at OpenAI before co-founding Anthropic, Amodei and Karnofsky reportedly used stuffed animals for "managerial role-playing," assigning them personalities to help analyze management problems. For instance, a cat named Jinji was described as encouraging Amodei to cancel meetings, while a pink bear named Maura acted as a detail-oriented manager. A panda named Beary Bonds was designated the "patron bear of generosity and empathy."
Anthropic, co-founded by Daniela Amodei and her brother Dario Amodei, is reportedly preparing for a significant initial public offering, though investors have expressed concerns about its valuation, suggesting a range between $1.5 trillion and $1.6 trillion as more realistic than the previously discussed $2 trillion. The company has not yet commented on these reports.
