American Airlines announced Tuesday a significant fleetwide upgrade plan focused on enhancing the passenger experience for premium travelers. The airline will increase the proportion of premium seats on its narrowbody aircraft from 25% to 40% of total capacity and install seatback entertainment screens across its fleet.
The initiative represents a strategic effort to boost revenue and close the profitability gap with competitors Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. American Airlines CEO Robert Isom has been actively investing in onboard amenities to capture more premium revenue.
"The integration of seatback screens and the addition of premium seating represent the latest milestones in American’s ongoing investments to modernize the end-to-end travel experience on the ground and in the air," the carrier stated.
Under the plan, the airline will reconfigure its narrowbody fleet to offer more first-class and extra-legroom seats. Seatback screens are slated for installation on over 800 narrowbody aircraft, with retrofits scheduled to begin in 2028 and conclude in the early 2030s. New Airbus and Boeing aircraft delivered from 2028 onward will come with pre-installed screens.
Currently, American Airlines operates more than 140 widebody and Airbus A321XLR aircraft that are already equipped with seatback screens. The cost of the fleet upgrade was not disclosed.
This move marks a shift from a strategy implemented nearly a decade ago, known as “Project Oasis,” which focused on increasing cabin density and reducing restroom size, betting that passengers would use their personal devices for entertainment. However, customer preferences have evolved, with American acknowledging a growing demand for larger seatback displays, especially among younger travelers, who also value high-speed Wi-Fi for a connected experience.
In the second quarter, premium travelers accounted for nearly half of American's ticketed revenue, despite occupying only 30% of the seats. The airline aims to further capitalize on this segment through its enhanced seating and entertainment offerings.
