American Airlines is implementing significant cabin upgrades, including the long-awaited addition of seatback entertainment screens, aiming to enhance its competitive standing against rivals Delta and United. The changes will be applied to both new and existing aircraft.

Passengers across all cabin classes will eventually have access to the screens, which will also feature Bluetooth audio pairing and USB-C charging ports. The airline has been considering this technology for several months, with executives previously deeming the upgrade too costly and citing concerns about added weight, expecting passengers to use their personal devices for entertainment.

In-Flight Entertainment Evolution

Delta and United already offer seatback entertainment screens on many of their flights, though the extent of availability varies. Experts suggest Delta has a more comprehensive rollout compared to United, which primarily features screens on widebody international aircraft, while many older domestic narrowbody planes still lack the technology. "The technology has advanced so much from when we made this decision more than a decade ago," Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden stated in an interview with CNBC. "Ultimately, when you have customer preference and customer satisfaction improvements, that also generates revenue."

New aircraft deliveries from Boeing and Airbus starting in 2028 will feature these new 4K displays. Other enhancements, such as updates to the frequent flyer program, are already in progress. American aims to convey that it can provide a premium travel experience comparable to Delta and United, while maintaining its established reputation for domestic service.

Financial Performance and Future Investments

American Airlines carries the highest number of annual passengers among the three major carriers, exceeding 220 million, and operates with the highest daily flight frequency. Despite record revenue of $16.7 billion last quarter, the airline reported a net income of just $71 million. In contrast, Delta and United reported net incomes of approximately $1.6 billion and $805 million, respectively, during the same period.

The airline is investing in its onboard experience, with a 13.4 percent rise in premium passenger unit revenue last quarter showing promise. American is also preparing to introduce Starlink high-speed Wi-Fi across its fleet beginning in 2027. "We’re making one of the most significant investments in the onboard experience in our history," American Airlines said in a statement. "From next-generation seatback entertainment at every seat to substantially more premium seating options, these enhancements will give our customers more ways to relax, stay connected and enjoy their journey."

American is one of the largest airlines operating in the US, serving over two million passengers annually

These strategic investments are intended to shift passenger perception, as some travelers have expressed concerns that a lack of seatback screens makes a cabin feel outdated. Online discussions indicate that while some question the necessity of screens in an era of personal devices, others believe the absence of them contributes to a perception of inferiority compared to competitors. This move is part of American's effort to balance its high passenger volume with improved profitability and a premium customer experience.
