According to local reports, an unknown gunman opened fire on Lunga's car. Lunga, 31, was reportedly on his way to church with his younger brother when the attack happened. South African publication The Citizen reported that the gunman may have mistaken Lunga for an undercover police officer.

Lunga escaped the incident unharmed. South African police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed that an investigation is underway but stated that no arrests have been made so far. No further details were immediately available from the police.
