Ilda Beatriz Goyochea, 32, died nearly a week after sustaining a significant neck wound during a dinner party at her home in La Rioja, northwestern Argentina. What was initially reported as a tragic accident involving a fall onto a wine glass is now being investigated as a potential crime by the Homicide Division of the La Rioja Police.
The investigation was prompted by a complaint from Goyochea's family attorney, Fernando Gabriel Brizuela, who stated that the wound was a straight cut measuring between three to four inches long. Brizuela argued that such a wound is inconsistent with an injury typically caused by broken glass, which usually results in an irregular cut.
Conflicting Accounts and Preventative Custody
Two individuals who attended the party have been taken into preventative custody following the discovery of contradictions in their accounts of the incident. A judge ordered the Homicide Division to take over the investigation, with Brizuela asserting that arrest warrants are issued only with solid grounds.
Attorneys for the two individuals in custody maintain that the gathering was a reunion of old friends without any animosity, insisting the event was a horrific accident. They stated, "It was a gathering of friends. They’ve known each other for years, and there were no prior conflicts between them."
The prosecution, however, has argued that a lack of apparent motive does not preclude intent. A pending autopsy is expected to provide further clarity on whether the wound could have been inflicted by broken glass.
Goyochea's family is reportedly seeking answers regarding the events of that night, including the timeline for when emergency assistance was called. She was initially taken to a private clinic before being transferred to a hospital due to the severity of her injuries. Investigators are also reviewing security footage from the vicinity of the home for any suspicious activity that may have occurred.
